On May 18, 2004, a Vietnam veteran crossed paths with a CDL driver. They began talking, but when the topic of hobbies came up, it was shared that the CDL driver had a hobby of converting tour busses into motor homes. 

The veteran (Calvin "Buck" Newton) immediately responded with,

"You need to build one of those for veterans"

When questioned, the veteran answered,

"There are tens of thousands of veterans in this country sitting at home just waiting to die".

That was the beginning of what is now 'Serving Veterans', based in Houston Texas. Volunteer drivers transporting veterans to their medical appointments, paid by donation only.

We continued to transport during COVID, and some of the most inclement weather situations, though we did not ask our drivers to make runs during 'Harvey'.

During those trips, conversations included veterans sharing their needs for repairs around their homes, because they could no longer do the types of work needed.

Serving Project has done a lot of home repairs, things like replacing fences, wheelchair ramps, drywall, paint, plumbing and electrical, doors and windows, Local contractors got involved.

Serving Veterans did build that motor home, (used only for the longer trips). Local trips, within 200 miles of the VA hospital or clinics, were completed using ordinary vehicles.

One more thing that was talked about a lot during trips was the places where the veterans were living, which gave them very little personal living space.

Working with many of those same veterans, Sapphire Ranch Properties has designed, and hopes to soon start building, veteran communities where quality and quiet will be the norm.
